Olean N.Y.
Olean was first settled in 1805 as “Hamilton” but after the discovery of oil nearby it was renamed “Olean Point”. In 1823 it officially became simply Olean. The largest city in Cattaraugus County, Olean is part of the Enchanted Mountains, home of the world famous Rock City Park and was the backdrop for the movie “Unstoppable.”. Located in the Enchanted Mountains of Cattaraugus County, Olean is a city of history makers and world famous industry. An infamous stop for many a president, gangster and financier Olean was once the largest producer of oil in the world and was the site of the very first pipeline built by J. D. Rockefellers’ Standard Oil to run oil to New Jersey refineries.

The History of North Union Street
All structures on North Union are currently made of brick or stone construction due to a law forbidding wooden structures after fire destroyed many of the original buildings in the late 1800’s

119 North Union
119 North Union Street is best known as F.R. Brothers the oldest pharmacy in Cattaraugus County and the worksite for the first woman pharmacist in Olean Gerty Keenan. Lesser known is that 119 was the original site of the First National Bank of Olean as can be witnessed by the presence of the large safe still on premises today. This Bank would later move down the street to 107 union and then down one more to come to be known as the Manufacturers Hanover.

in the Heart of the Enchanted Mountains
Legend has it that this area’s Alluring beauty
captivated “Yum Yum” Anderson so deeply,
that he was inspired to use the term “Enchanted Mountains”
which is used to this day!
